Present Master’s thesis analyse a project supported by Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen, which objective is to establish collaboration between a public library, Køge Bibliotek, and an educational institution, Campus Køge. The thesis’s objective is to shed light on how the public library can be a relevant collaboration partner for the educational institution, and how the collaboration can be justified. Furthermore, the thesis analyse the collaboration form to evaluate whether Køge Bibliotek and Campus Køge have established a sustainable collaboration with mutual interest.
The thesis is in two parts, where the first part is a comparative analysis of the two institutions field of operation, role and regulatory requirements. In assessment of the public library’s function and situation the thesis involve Dorte Skot-Hansen’s (2014) Kulturpolitiske Rationaler – especially focusing on the rationale of enlightenment and the non-instrumental rationale; the aesthetic experience; the report ‘Folkebiblioteket I videnssamfundet’ developed by associate professor from INF as well as the general development of society with focus on the impact of digitalization on the public library as an institution. Following the thesis reviews the demands to educational institutions with basis in the national reform of the gymnasium from 2017, the governmental agreement ‘Aftale om styrkede gymnasiale uddannelser’ and the report from think tank DEA ‘Hvordan uddanner vi til fremtidens arbejdsmarked?’. The thesis includes Lars Geers Hammershøjs definition of bildung, which ties to an individual’s personal and professional resources that are indispensable in both todays and the future labour market.
The thesis argue, that the collaboration between Campus Køge and Køge Bibliotek, with basis in this ideal for bildung, facilitate development of demanded competences in business communities and the society in general, and thereby justify the collaboration. In additions, the thesis include theory that points to more educational processes developed in collaboration between these institutions create a good environment for learning and facilitate motivation among young people.
In the second part, where the collaboration form is evaluated, the thesis uses theory by Star and Griesemer (1989) to claim the students at Campus Køge have been a boundary object for the collaboration between the institutions and that the collaboration’s departure in this boundary object have led to common purpose, interest and transformation, as described by Carlile (2002). Furthermore, the project will highlight the collaboration process from a pragmatic perspective using Sara Sarasvathy’s (2001) theory; Effectuation, where the thesis identify an entrepreneurial approach to the project from the employees involved and based on Kristiansson (2017) claim that this approach have been contributing to sustainability of the collaboration.
The thesis ends in a summary followed by a discussion about the possibility to justify the public library’s function, thus also the educational institutions’ use of resource on library offerings and collaboration, based on expressive logics as well as a discussion on the degree effectuation principles can facilitate development of the public library function; promote bildung of the citizen in a present perspective.
