It is the aim of this thisis to analyse the distinction between high og lowculture through the histrory, and analyse its consequenses for the distinction between high and low culture today.
The distinction between hig and low took its beginning I the 1600 century. One of the main reasons for this distinction was the inventing of the art of printing books. This leads to a better entlightended population. Before this it was a minority who had acces to knowledge. With this change, people would no longer accept to be hold in the dark. The distinktion between high and low culture was in the first period of relgious criterias, and in the second period it was secular criterias. Later is the distinction between high and lowculture based on what the elite on that time think was the right culture or bad culture. The mainreason for this distinction was the start of the industrialization and the urbanization. A central saying in this period was of Matthew Arnold about what the right culture was: “The best that has been said and thought”. Another later reasons for the distinction was also the fear for the lack of authority. Later is the distinction criticized by Susan Sontag who claimes that the old distinction is no longer has any value, because of the “new sensibility”. Later analyzes discuss what make the diffences in the distinction of high and low culture. Pierre Bourdiu argues for that it is the structure in the society, others partly agress, but argues for aother way to analyse the distinction. The omnivore consumer is the title of the modern user of culture, a consumer who use high and low culture. The instutitions and the common view on popular culture have been critised for bieng to narrow by other theorists. Three cases have been included to bring the theoretical aspects into play. The first is an article and a interview by the leader of The Royal Theater in Denmark, the second is an article about the moderne cultureconsumer and the third is two cultureexpressions, a themepark and a litteraturemagazine.
One of the mainconclusions is the the distinction between high and low culture still exist. The form and function of the distinction has change. One of the change is a more openminded attitude to popular culture.
