Statistics show that loneliness is a problem that affects people at all ages. However, it is especially prevalent among older citizens over 65 years of age. Loneliness is a phenomenon now characterized as an anomaly as it has developed to be part of our daily life.
This thesis aims to examine and discuss whether it would be possible to establish a garden in the borough of Bispebjerg in Copenhagen. The garden is meant for everybody, but the main focus is on the elderly people in the borough. The garden aims to be a framework for communities and to minimize loneliness among the target group. The thesis is based on an entrepreneurial approach and uses amongst other things the method and theory by Saras D. Saravathy about effectuation. We use her model “The dynamic model of effectuation” as our guideline, which means that the structure of this thesis will differ from other theses; the different chapters are placed so it makes sense in relation to the model. Besides the model we use the term social entrepreneurship and elements of this such as bricolage.
Analyzing how loneliness should be understood becomes relevant through the model as well as whether or not the elements of Nature can remedy this phenomenon. The analysis also examines which elements that should be in a garden so it would be optimal for the elderly. Thus, the thesis is an analysis of and a reflection on a process focusing on opportunities. An outcome of the analysis was the execution of two workshops with citizens and users in Bispebjerg. Another outcome was six qualitative research interviews with garden designers and people knowing about and working with loneliness and elderly people.
Due to the fact that this is an entrepreneurial thesis our work process will also be a part of the analysis including the thoughts and changes we have made during the process.
With the knowledge from the analysis, the thesis concludes that loneliness must be seen as both a social phenomenon and as a psychological phenomenon. With the elements from the nature, it will be possible to establish a garden, which can form communities. As the garden has more than one target group it is important to focus on the elderly in the design process because of their physique and health. By analyzing the results from the two workshops and from the professionals, it is possible to design a garden with the most optimal elements that benefit the elderly people in Bispebjerg. The main thesis therefore also concludes that it is possible to remedy loneliness with Nature.
