The creative city, the experience economy and the knowledge society have provided new premises for urban development. Today cities are increasingly in competition to attract citizens, businesses and tourists. Urban design has become competitive parameters. This imposes extensive demands for urban planners to create spaces that support proximity, diversity, and accessibility but at the same time gives the individual cultures a safe domain.
A trend, related to the experiences cities, is shown in the revitalisation of former industrial ports, which are increasingly transformed into modern recreational areas. In Elsinore the city’s former industrial harbour has been revitalisation into a cultural public space. The Cultural harbour is established with the intention to give the city identity, visibility and to offer special attractions for residents and visitors.
This thesis is a case study of the public life in the culture centre of Elsinore. The study is focused on the square as a residence and meeting place for the citizens of Elsinore. It has two main perspectives: A physical spatial analysis and cultural analysis. The two perspectives are brought together in a transversal analysis and put in relation to different themes, which research scientist indicates is significant for the use of public space.
The study produces examples of how the relationship between culture and spacial design can be observed and described in the context of the current situation for public spaces.
The study concludes that the architectural design of the square in Elsinore is mainly focused on a visual exposure of three cultural institutions, and thereby the cultural diversity in the square is being limited. It is concluded that qualities of the architectural design doesn’t sufficiently support a good urban environment and is therefore not attractive for stay and meeting.
