360º video is developing fast in these years, and more institutions are getting serious about the production and use of 360º video. One area that is starting to use 360º video is the cultural institutions. In this thesis, we strive to find out how cultural institutions can use 360º video in their cultural communication, and further to identify potentials and barriers for 360º video in cultural communication in general.
A 360º video was produced in collaboration with Designmuseum Danmark and tested on potential users, to analyze the users experience of cultural content through 360º video. The study shows that 360º video has affordances to create immersive virtual environments. These environments have the potential to support learning by having the ability to create a high level of experienced presence. Furthermore, 360º video can support cultural institutions in the way they create and distribute cultural content. By creating engaging virtual environments 360º video has the ability to extend the museum experience and make it independent of time and space.
There are however some barriers for the use of 360º video in cultural communication. These include social exclusion during the viewing experience and the novelty and cost of the technology.
