The aim of the thesis is to carry out a comparative critical discourse analysis of language from the websites of a public area and of a commercial area. The object is to find linguistic differences in intentions in the communication of health knowledge to the citizens. It is the appearance of discourse types on the websites that are the objects of an analysis and interpretation. Faircloughs three-dimensional model of discourse analysis is used for the analysis. Jakobsons communication model is included in order to describe the basic functions of communication. Thorlacius’ intersemiotic function is included to support the analysis of the visual aspects on the websites. The results show several differences in the discourses that are found on the websites. It appears that both websites contain interdiscoursivity of varied kind. In the public area the discourse appearance is of a traditional kind. In the commercial area the discourse appearance is of a more mixed kind, and is developing into new discourse types. The findings show signs of change and struggle. The commercial websites constructs the discourse linguistically around hegemonies and ideology in order to make changes and struggles upon the discourses according to the public area. The analysis of discourse is useful in order to obtain critical awareness of language used in the media, in the public area and in commercial areas.
