In 2005 the municipality of Copenhagen decided to launch a strategy for the area “Kødbyen” – the Meat Packing District, called “Meat and creativity”. The aim was to combine the already existing food production businesses with creative businesses and experiences, such as galleries, restaurants and design. The plan was make a new unique combination that could brand Copenhagen as a trendsetter for visiting tourists and others, by supporting the living conditions and the economic growth of the existing and new businesses.

In this thesis I will analyse the possible inconsistencies between the municipality of Copenhagen and the tenants of the Meat Packing District, and discuss which problems this can lead to. Moreover I will discuss how future plans can contribute to create more consistency between the municipality of Copenhagen and the tenants of the Meat Packing District, and which actions that can be taken in connection to this.

The focus of this thesis is to examine how the plans of the Copenhagen municipality and the growth of the Meat Packing District are expressed, compared to the actual situation through interviews and written plans. Subsequently I will discuss to which extend the Meat Packing District and the surrounding areas are a part of the growing gentrification of city areas, and how possible city planning strategies and co-creation and involvement of citizens can be used to address this.
