The subject of this thesis is to present a conceptual analysis of the concepts of discipline and interdisciplinarity and a discussion of how classification and classification systems challenge working within interdisciplinary fields. One focus is to elaborate on a theoretical discussion about the extent to which classification and classification theories should be affected by interdisciplinarity. A second focus is to address the influence of analyses and discussions of interdisciplinarity and how these analyses and discussions influence the design of knowledge organization systems. Furthermore the thesis elaborates on how to work with and organize knowledge in an interdisciplinary subject area, in a theoretical level.
The interest in the topic derives from practical experience, specifically caused by challenges regarding classification of books within the framework of a specific classification system, so the locations makes the most sense in relation to the students’ various thematic approaches, in interdisciplinary studies.

The thesis concludes that the discussion of interdisciplinarity, it is important to include in the discussion about classification and classification theories in general. In information science we should be aware of the development of interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinary fields in the future work and development of knowledge organization systems. An interdisciplinary field is to be accessed as any other given domain, for workflows for the creation of a knowledge organization system, and one should be aware of the degree of interdisciplinarity and the interacting fields level of cooperation. Furthermore, we should pay attention to the impact of fundamental philosophical approaches and level of bias impact on the interdisciplinary fields studied, - the same applies to disciplinary fields and is thus not special for classification of interdisciplinary fields.
