In this thesis I will be investigating the concept of dissemination. The inspiration for this stems from my interest in understanding the concept as a whole, regardless of the method or content of the dissemination. The limits of the thesis, however, make it necessary to conduct a more detailed appraisal. I have therefore chosen to look closer into the dissemination process in cultural reviews. I am investigating and comparing reviews of literature, film, music and theatre plays in order to understand the communication practices in this genre. In my problem statement I ask if one can identify dissemination paradigms in the practices of cultural reviews, and if so, can these paradigms contribute to an understanding of dissemination within the genre?
The theoretical foundation for the thesis lies within communication theory, with a special emphasis on Jens Gudiksen’s article Formidling. In this text, he provides a characterization of different understandings of dissemination and their basis in communication theory and research typology (Gudiksen, 2005). According to Gudiksen, the communication in the review genre can be described as external relations between the involved parties. I use a comprehensive research approach in order to understand the act of the senders behind this communication. My method, therefore, comprises first of all of an analytical approach, where I make use of Roman Jakobson’s communication model (Jakobson, 1979) and Norman Fairclough’s (2008) critical discourse analysis. In order to understand the thoughts and practices behind the communication I also make use of domain analysis. This method supports the investigation of epistemological principals and will therefore be beneficial in identifying any dissemination paradigms.
After analysing reviews of the double volume book Limfjorden, the motion picture Dirch, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers music album I’m With You and the theatre play Den Gerrige (Eng. title The Miser), I discuss the findings in order to reach an understanding of the epistemology behind the review practices. Finally, I cast a glance at developing tendencies within the review genre and cultural journalism in Denmark, where I also pay some attention to the debate regarding the future role of today’s reviewers.
