The research library, in its traditional form, is challenged by the constant changes in and hyper complexity of the information society, in which creation, distribution and use of information and knowledge are significant factors integrated in all parts of society. Due to hyper complexity lifelong learning and knowledge have become the only instruments for dealing with the innovation of the society. In a time where the Web is filled with easily accessible information of questionable quality, the purpose of this study is to portray the opportunities available to the research library; the opportunities of being a proactive and equal sparring partner in the learning-environment and the surrounding business community. This study is partly based on a combination of theoretical assumptions and models, particularly focusing on learning and knowledge, and partly on an empirical hermeneutic case study of Aalborg University Library’s traditional and non-traditional roles and functions, as well as the library’s development-oriented projects.
The study concludes that Aalborg University Library, through problem-based learning as the dominant pedagogical model of learning, focuses on progress through cooperation with the surrounding business community and learning environment. This occurs through VBN, which is a digital knowledge database, close research-based cooperation on authentic research issues and specific courses in searching and seeking. The potential of the future research library, in relation to the business community, is discussed from an industrial-promotion system perspective, in which the research library has great potential in cooperation with policy institutions, research parks, information consultants and high-tech companies. Other development-oriented potentials discussed in this study are; Digital Humanities, a shared digital promotion platform, expanded research communication and social technologies in personification of specific library services, new literacy, e-learning and others.
