Eva Deichmann has been a part of the Danish theatre scene for half a century and is still active today, despite the fact she has passed her retirement age.
Through interviews, research and information gathering, I will create an overview of Eva Deichmann's work in Danish theater. The thesis will reflect on the biography as genre, including conventions, ethics, as well as the strengths, weaknesses and necessities of biography as historical writing. The biography has been made through qualitative methods and theories about interviews.
The thesis has been structured in three parts, taking account of theories and methods that I have learned throughout my studies on Information Science and Cultural Mediation.
PART I is the first part of the thesis and explains the method and the considerations that have been around this. The main methods will primarily be interviews. Interviews are a multifaceted discipline and there is several directions within the discipline. Some of these will be explained, and there will be an introduction of the interviewees. In addition, a biography requires a large amount of information collection from different sources. These are also elaborated. Part I also looks at the theoretical basis for the history of biography, the biography as genre, and a historical perspective of biographies, as well as the biography as a way of forming identities.
PART II is the second part of the thesis and contains the actual biography of Eva Deichmann. The biography is divided into 8 chapters and is structured chronologically. This part will be the analysis of the thesis, where I have used the methods and theories of part I.
PART III is the third and last part of the thesis. It contains reflections and discussions of the chosen theory and method, as well as the biography. There will also be reflected upon the strengths and weaknesses of biographies, as well as the ethical aspects that can be a challenge in the biography. Finally, there will be a conclusion of the thesis.
I conclude that biography as a genre has a place in our culture for both historical purposes and identity formation for both biographer, biography and the reader. I also conclude that the biographer has a responsibility to portray his or her subject with respect and dignity.
