The subject of this thesis is motivated by the ongoing debate in the media describing the public libraries as irrelevant and nearly doomed. At the same time, attention has been brought upon the seemingly insecure identity of the library as an institution, due to the fact that it’s faced with challenges in solving municipal tasks, that lie outside its own purpose.
The thesis examines how a rethinking or repurpose of the ideas of enlightenment could influence and strengthen the identity of the public library today. Furthermore, this thesis touches on the possibility of a new legal frame for the public libraries, and how a new law could contribute to such a development.
The investigation is based on two different case studies. One is a cooperation-project between libraries and public schools concerning learning, and the other, an analysis of strategies, events and projects from Randers public library. Furthermore, a discourse analysis is included, this analysis will be based on the debate, as well as discussions and contributions from The Danish Library Association summit in April 2018.
The thesis examines that the current understanding of the concept of enlightenment is still influenced by its significance in the early history and development of the public libraries, where it was related to the purpose of the education and disciplining of the citizens.
This was significant in the discourse analysis, where the debate of politicians, and the library professionals, was examined.
The case studies of library projects, shows a partial reduction in the level of enlightenment, according to a more disciplinary way of education and information, but the level of a broader information purpose and focus through experiences and cultural activities was significant.
It is concluded that a re-thinking of the idea of enlightenment could help strengthen the Library identity and practice. This re-evaluation should emphasize that further enlightenment stems, not only from learning through what is rationally experienced, but also through alternate ways of learning, and in the confrontation of new perspectives.
It is also concluded that such a re-evaluation, conjoining the purposes of learning and cultural activity would be appropriate as an objective or as an inspiration for a new library legal directive.
