The National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst, SMK) established in 2007 u.l.k as part of a their strategy to involve young people at the art museum and Brandts, (Museum of Modern Art) in the last two years worked goal-oriented with a strategy that would make the museum a popular choice for young people among all their leisure activities. Both museums have employed youth programs and focal points of the strategies are to involve the young people through participation.

In this dissertation I will analyze how the participation of young people could affect the cultural institutions and if and what value it could bring to the institution. Does participation of young people at the museum make it more attractive to this particular segment? Does it have an effect towards mediating art and culture to young people who are not interested in art and traditionally don’t visit the museum.

I will explore the why and how the youth strategy’s has been developed and why there is a shift in mediating at the museum to a more participatory approach. And I will discuss these participatory strategy’s in a way that will include a closer look at how young people participate, a what level and how the museum strategy fit into the daily life and leisure time of young people.
