Abstract
The art- and cultural institutions in Denmark are facing numeorus challenges in the postmodern society. Moving from an instrumental approach towards an expressive approach, the institutions have to develop new ways to interact with its audience, especially the younger generations who have their own ways of using what the art- and cultural institutions have to offer.
Among such institutions are the public libraries. While their traditional aim continues to be to provide information and education to its users, an underlying intention is also to ensure a continued interest from existing users, and attract new visitors.
The physical layout of public libraries are undergoing a change. Where the traditional book before had a totally dominant role, books are now forced to share space with other media such as movies, music, e-books, computer games etc.
Since much of this media is provided on a digital basis, it comparatively delivers a large amount of information distributed on a smaller physical space than the traditional books.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how libraries can interact with the younger audience and encourage user participation in their future approach.
I will focus on two concepts relating to 'aesthetics as a perceptible experience'. The purpose of the thesis, is to strengthen performative cultural communication with regard to libraries.
One of the later tendencies that has accured, is the awareness of aesthetics as a truly perceptible experience. .By involving aesthetics as a perceptible experience into the way we convey culture, aesthetics can be used as a strategic tool.
The question is can the libraries by using atmosphere - both visual and non-visual in the form of "moods" – and the ’presence theory’ influence the library visitor and thereby strengthen and support the expressive cultural communication effort.
