The purpose of this thesis is to explore the added value of the music service from the Danish public libraries, Bibzoom, and to discuss the future organization of a music service from the libraries, and how it is possible to maintain right to exist of such a service in a world where commercial music streaming services are becoming ever more dominant.

The current added value of the service compared to the commercial music streaming services is examined by conducting a qualitative interview study with former and current users of Bibzoom. In an analysis of the results of this study it is concluded that the only added value of Bibzoom lies in the editorial content that the service provides, and that only few of the interviewed users are familiar with.

A method of future studies and scenario planning is used in the discussion of the future form of a music service from the libraries.

Based on theories of the society after the introduction of the world wide web, megatrends that can be expected to have an effect on the society onwards are identified. The megatrends and the results of the interview study are used to develop three scenarios on how the future of a music service from the Danish public libraries will form.

The thesis concludes that the Danish public libraries, in order to provide a music service that is contemporary will have to continuously develop their service. This they can do by utilizing the potential of being present on an internet platform and their existing broad spectrum knowledge and music material.
