This paper discusses the topic of information behavior in The Open Library. The concept of the open library is a newer concept seen in some of the smaller branches of the Danish Public Library, where the opening hours vary between staffed hours and unmanned library hours where the patrons are self servicing in the library. Using the two methods observation and interviews at Broby Library. This paper seeks to answer the questions of how the patrons use the open library, what they borrow and how they find these materials. Also which different behavior patterns the patrons of Broby Library show during the manned and unmanned hours and how these differs and lastly is discussed why a concept such as the open library suddenly becomes popular?

The results of this paper show that the patrons primarily use the open library to borrow and return materials. Furthermore it is also used by the patrons to pick up requested materials, use the computers and read magazines. The users of the manned library primarily borrow books and more specific novels whereas the users of the open library also take home films, cartoons, computer games and audiotapes. The patrons find these materials by browsing the shelves or request them prior to their visit at the library. Only four patrons are observed using the search engine during the open library hours and none are seen calling the librarian. The users of the open library tend to be more focused and determined in their behavior and they browse more than the users of the manned library.

We believe this phenomenon to be a result of the development in society where the patrons with a busy schedule need flexible library hours. Self-service has also become more widely spread and is found in check-out on most Danish libraries these days. Furthermore due to cut backs in staff this type of library can serve as a way to preserve the opening hours in the smaller libraries in Denmark. Therefore the open library must be seen as a service improvement rather than downsizing the libraries.
