This master thesis examines the challenges involved in defining usability and seeks to establish a method for determining the expectations of the future stakeholders of a given system. The theoretical framework of the investigationdraws on Morten Hertzums article "images of usability" which describes six broad-covering perspectives on the study of usability. The purpose of my approach is to make a framework which set the starting point for a closer connection between different approaches to usability and enable system developers to define concrete but theoretically grounded usability goals based on the assumptions expressed by the different stakeholders of the future system. The study seeks to work with usability in itswidest andmost comprehensive sense.
The thesis consists of three areas: (i) a theoretical discussion of usability (ii) establishment of the basic epistemological and methodological principles in my approach, (iii) a case study of the operationality of working with the six images of usability as a triangulating tool for determining a starting point for defining a specific system's usability.
The theoretical discussion starts out by considering the definition problem of usability and the complexity of working with such a context dependent and emergent concept. Based on the multiplicity of usability I argue that, approaches with their own predefined expectations about what will establish a usable system, need to consider different perspectives on usability at the very outset of a system development process until its end. Consequently I want to establish a starting point that states the assumptions of a specific system’s usability. Following this discussion I offer an outline of a methodology that incorporates such a multiplicity of perspectives by triangulating the six images of usability in a semi-structured interview with graphic mapping. To test the method a case study is conducted with six stakeholders related to a future system that reviews games and apps suited for primary school students with reading and writing difficulties.
The study shows that the six images of usability are well applicable in the design of the study and that it does collect a broad spectre of information indicating what is important to consider in the initial definition of the future system from the stakeholders' perspective. On the other hand the six images are not well suited as an analysis or classification tool because the images are highly interrelated.
On this ground I conclude that the study conducted is able to create a framework of the theoretical considerations of usability expressed by stakeholders in the initial part of system development and make it possible for system developers to consider usability as a concrete tool to calibrate the system with its surroundings from the first step of the development.
