Abstract

This thesis is exploring how the physical library in the ‘Knowledge Society’ can appeal to the low educated non-users, by prioritizing specific areas in the library development in order to encourage non-users for future library use.
I have included user surveys and statistics to describe what characterize the non-users. Through the analysis I have illustrated what can explain the non-users lac of library need in relation to Pierre Bourdieu’s culture capital term. This is supplemented with the low educated special needs in specific life stages where, I will argument, that generation and age can have an influence on the library use of the low educated.
Furthermore, I will be using the model “The four spaces”, in a discussion of how a future library development can make the library relevant to the low educated non-users.
Finally it will be concluded that it is difficult to develop the library to non-users because of their many nuances. However, by examining the lifestyle characteristics of the non-users and by supporting their leisure time, it might have a positive influence on the low educated non-users future use.
